What paint should you select?

Paint may be defined as any liquid, used to protect, color, or provide texture to objects. It usually converts to solid form when applied to a substrate in thin layer. Paint comes in different luster and is available in oil or in latex. Many homeowners prefer latex over oil since latex can be cleaned easily and it has a long lasting durability. Latex is also loved because it tends to be fade resistant. Of course realistically speaking, it also fades but in a longer period of time.

Latex paint is ideal for most walls in the house. Oil based paint is good for priming wood moldings and trim since the paint can seal stains and knots better than latex. Remember also that oil dries longer than latex paint.

What is luster and its significance?

Luster or sheen is the shine that is created by the paint. As a rule of thumb, the glossier the paint, the easier it is to clean up. High gloss sheen is ideal on walls that gets dirty often such as the kitchen and the playroom. The stain or dirt can be wiped out of the wall easily when the paint used is as such. Unfortunately, high gloss sheen paint can make imperfections and blemishes more obvious in the walls. Semi gloss on the other hand is the right choice for kitchen and baths as it can provide you with the ease of wash ability.

For walls with imperfections, flat or matte paint is the perfect choice. The good thing about flat is that one coat of paint may already be enough. However, the drawback is that dirt may be seen easily when this paint is used. Therefore, if you decide to use this paint on the walls, be sure to use them on rooms that are not prone to dirt and fingerprints. The paint is easier to wash and more durable and smoother to the touch.

How about the color, what should I choose?

Actually, choosing the right color depends on you. If you are planning to sell the house or have it rented, white or off-white are the ideal colors of the walls. Plainly colored walls will allow the tenant or the buyer to paint the wall with their personal choice of color. White can also provide brighter and clean room appearance. There are hundreds of color and shades to choose from and are available in the local paint store.
