About Sandro Botticelli

Sandro Botticelli was a Florentine painter and draughtsman and a revered artist in Italy. Among his works are the Madonna and Child, altarpieces, and life - size mythological paintings like Venus and Mars were those that were popular during his lifetime. Botticelli was the son of a tanner and was known for his sharp wit and his love for practical jokes. During his childhood days, he was known for being restless and hyperactive. Eventually,Botticelli dropped out from school and was sent to work as an apprentice. He painted a wide range of religious subjects and some portraits, as well as a small number of mythological subjects. Among his known works are The Birth of Venus and Primavera. Botticelli has been described as “an outsider on the mainstream of Italian painting” who had limited interest in many of the developments most associated with Quattrocento painting, such as the depiction of human anatomy, perspective, and landscape and the use of direct borrowings from the classical art. With his intense trainings, he was able to represent all these aspects of painting, without the adopting or even contributing to their development.
