Why the focal point is an important design ingredient

Focal point and interior design

Try to visit your friend’s house and note what you see first. It is the huge canvas print on the wall? The fireplace? Or the indoor garden? Or perhaps something unique added by your friend? Has there also been an instance when you visited a house where you did not notice anything? If this is the case, then the house lacks a focal point.

In interior design, a focal point is actually something that will attract interest and attention in a room. It is something that will draw the eyes of people and impress them with decorative items. The addition of a particular item can likewise create mood or theme that makes the room more interesting. An example is the incorporation of portrait painting placed above the fireplace, or an entire wall featuring a breathtaking landmark wall mural, or a beautiful vase filled with fresh flowers, or even an interesting sculpture can define the appearance of the room. These items are immediately noticed once you enter a room and can create its atmosphere. In addition to these, the addition of these items can be visually impressive and welcoming.

Adding focal point to make the house more interesting

A focal point can be anything that is added in a room that can draw the eyes towards it. In contrast to the assumptions of many, the focal point of a room does not have to be luxurious, large, or colorful. Yes it is true that a large piece of item can attract visual interest, but that’s not always the case. It is the quality of the focal point’s visual display that makes it impressive and not the mass of the room it takes up. A focal point need not be expensive as well. You can actually add a focal point even if you purchased it from a yard sale or a thrift shop. As long as the item added can tremendously improve the visual and aesthetic quality of the room, that item can be considered a good focal point.

Tips to create a focal point in a room

Creating a focal point may not be that complicated. There are different ways to create a decent focal point in the home. Here are some tips on how to create a room’s focal point.

The very first thing that you need to consider is if there has already been an existing focal point in the room. This can be a window or a group of windows that draws all eyes to the natural light and the movement in the landscape, a skyline or other outdoor element. You may also have a good fireplace or a high ceiling or even an amazing light fixture can be great room’s focal point.

If you are certain that your room does not have any existing focal point, you can create one by adding a feature wall. Choose one part of the wall and paint it with a different color than the rest of your walls, or fill it up with a textured wallpaper. You may also position brightly colored piece of furniture in the room, or built-in shelving, or even a large mirror.

Go bold with colors as this add focus. For example, you can paint the ceiling with a bold red color and framing it with dark moldings. However, keep the colors and patterns in the room at a minimum so they would not clash against each other.

Remember that a room should only have one focal point and not a multiple one. Multiple focal points can become an unhealthy competition and makes the room feel uncomfortable.

Add an artwork, something that is large and eye-catching. Mount the artwork where it is visible from the entry to the room and install dramatic lighting to emphasize it. You may also look for special features, such as an unusual shape to the room or arches, high ceilings, interesting ceiling details, angled walls, winding staircase, built-in bookcases and entertainment centers.

Be creative and imaginative in creating a focal point in your room and you will definitely have an attractive home interior.
