The city of Lansing has the particular distinction of being the only state capital in the United States that is not also a county seat. Modern and thriving

In the winter between 1835 and 1836, two brothers who were native New Yorkers plotted the land that is now called the REO Town, just south of Lansing, and called it Biddle City. This area sat in the middle of a floodplain and was covered in water for most of the year. But this didn’t stop the brothers from going back to New York and selling parcels of the town that were not yet in existence. They drew a picture for the prospective buyers, of a new city, with an area of 65 blocks, a church, and a public and school square. 16 excited buyers purchased the imaginary parcels of land, and when they visited the area and found out they were duped, they felt dejected and decided to stay and settle in what would later become metropolitan Lansing.
